II.Retrofit Engineering Solution for EGCS

SOx Emission Regulation

  • Entry Into Force : From 2020. 01. 01. (MEPC 70 / 20 October 2016.)
  • SOx Emission Limit : GLOBAL 0.5%, ECA 0.1%
Area Sulphur limit Scrubbers
Global 0.5%(2020) Yes
Sulphur ECA 0.1% Yes
Balitic Sea and the North Sea 0.1% in all ports Open-loop restricted in some countries
China 0.5% in selected areas Yes
California 0.1% within 24nm No, Only through research examption

Compliance of SOx emission regulation

Use of Low-Sulfut Marine Fuels

  • No need to install EGCS
  • Expensive than HFO (around 40~60%)
  • A small initial investment which is to replace
older pumps with modern booster system
designed to handle changeover between fuels
    of different temperatures and viscosities.

Using Alternative Fuel, Such as LNG

  • Eco-friendly
  • Low operating cost
  • Needed to install the LNG storage tank
    and LNG supply facility
  • Needed LNG bunkering facility

Installation of An EGCS

  • A initial substantial investment.
  • Can continue operating HFO
  • PAY BACK (Around in 3 years)
  • Most competitive (Long-term cost advantage)

The type of EGCS

OPEN LOOP

  • Arrangement scrubs the exhaust gas directly
with seawater which is then legally
    discharged back into the sea
  • Not perform adequately in low-alkalinity
waters, such as the northern waters of the
    Baltic Sea.

CLOSED LOOP

  • Using Fresh water
  • Needed an alkaline additive (Caustic Soda)
    to scrubber water
  • Higher operating cost due to use for
    desalinated water and additive

HYBRID

  • OPEN and CLOSED LOOP both modes available
  • OPEN LOOP : Ocean
  • CLOSED LOOP : Sensitive Sea Or Low alkalinity
    water

Consideration for EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning System)

  • In principle, the EGCS system can be installed in the Engine Room Casing, as its location does not offer a significant risk. Therefore, there are no special limitations for the location of the installation.
  • However, It should be checked whether it has sufficient space for EGCS installation. Especially, further consideration should be considered as below.
  • Stability and damage Stability
  • Number of Equipment
  • Light Weight, ITC and GM
    – Loading manual and Loading computer Revision (if required)
    – Whether necessary inclining test according to light weight change
  • Engine room FFEA and fire detection system according to volumetric Increase of E/R
  • Engine room FFEA and fire detection system according to volumetric Increase of E/R
  • Piping system including exhaust pipes according to Class Rules and Flag requirement
  • Sea Chest and Overboard
  • Electrical Load Analysis relation to electrical equipment such as wiring, ACB and etc.
  • Navigation lighting system according to 1972 COLREG

Consideration for EGCS Survey (SCHEME A / SCHEME B)

  • Provision of two basic Schemes for compliance to be used for EGCS approval, Scheme A or
Scheme B, at the choice of the equipment manufacturer. The two EGCS schemes apply the
    following concepts.
Comparison SCHEME A SCHEME B
Description
  • It verified performance in combination with exhaust gas machine (M/E, G/E, etc.)
  • The monitor is installed for monitoring only few parameters during operation.
  • It measures the amount of SOx in the exhaust gas continuously during operation after installation on the ship.
  • CMS(Continuous Monitoring System) for checking ratio of SO2/CO2 in the exhaust gas shall be installed.

Document’s Image (Electrical Part)

  • These followings are the main electrical drawings submitted during the EGCS retrofit.
  • These are the main electrical power system revisions including MSBD and the arrangement of the
    electrical machinery to be installed.

Sample of additional Electrical Load

  • It is important to cover the rated current of the MSBD should be within the EGCS rated current.
  • According to SOLAS Reg.II-1/41, total electrical load must be within 90% of load factor when “SEA GOING” even though
the electrical load of the EGCS is an addition to the total electrical load of the ship.
  • If the total load factor exceed 90%, the installation of an additional generator set should be considered.

Sample of Fire Detecting & Fire Extinguishing System

  • In addition, it is required the re-position of fire extinguishing equipment, including smoke detector
as the EGCS retrofit may have extended such as Casing and Funnel.
  • This shall be in accordance with the regulations for FSS Code (Code10 Amend/ Chapter 10.2.3).

Sample Fire Detecting & Fire Extinguishing System

  • In case of fixed CO2 fire extinguishing system, it is shall be considered to enable whether the existing CO2
volume is cover the volume after expansion of casing in accordance with FSS code (Code 12 Amend / Chapter 5.2.2)
  • If the amount of CO2 installed on the ship does not cover the required amount, it should be installed additional
    CO2 cylinders and nozzle.

Sample recalculation relating stability

  • The ship’s lightweight will be changed when the EGCS system is installed on the vessel. Consequently,
a detailed weights and centers (LCG and VCG) calculation to adjust the lightship properties should be
conducted and the surveyor should confirm the deviations and sign on the calculated lightweight data sheets.

  • An inclining test should be carried out and the stability
booklet (incl. final stability data, damage stability calculation, loading instruments etc.)
should be re-approved when the deviation of the lightweight exceeds
2% or more of the original approved lightweight or 2 tonnes, which is greater, or the deviation of lightship
longitudinal center of gravity exceeds 1% or more of the LBP.
